TMR members feature in Ramblers training films
Early in 2025, Tonbridge and Malling Ramblers members, Nicola and Leonie, had the opportunity to carry out a filmed recce for a 5.5 mile walk from the village of Offham. The resulting 2.5 minutes film is now being used as a resource for walk leader training, along with a second short film illustrating what to include in a walk briefing.
“It was an interesting and fun experience”, said Nicola, who led the recce with walking partner Leonie. “It was a genuine recce walk so we didn’t know what we would encounter. We were quite pleased to come across a fallen tree and a few other hazards which helped demonstrate the need for recceing every Ramblers walk,” she added. Several T&M members acted as ‘extras’ to form an audience for the walk briefing film. Each film includes material to illustrate what Ramblers expects from its walk leaders, and will be used to help new leaders develop their skills.
Neil Whittall, Chair of T&M Ramblers, said, “We were pleased to be involved with this project and to contribute to Ramblers’ walk leadership resources. All local groups benefit from the work that The Ramblers does to set the standards for group walks around the UK - so this was an opportunity to give something back.”

Abolition of the 2031 deadline to record historic rights of way
The UK government has announced it will remove the 2031 deadline to record historic rights of way in England, ending the threat to over 41,000 miles of unrecorded paths.
At a time when we should be breaking down barriers to the outdoors, both in cities and rural areas, the repeal of this deadline is a move in the right direction. The Ramblers would like to see the path network not only protected but continue to be improved, which will help more people enjoy its health and wellbeing benefits and fuel economic growth in local communities.
